Slightly off topic, but original works of art may be in jeopardy due to a new bill

A friend of mine, and comic artist (the guy who did the great pictures of a lot of Circus-13 characters) just pointed me to this article about possible new copyright laws here in the US called The Orphan Bill.

Essentially what it boils down to is copyrights would no longer be handled by the government but by corporations.  Anyone see the problem with this yet?  It gets better.

Under current copyright law, you do NOT have to register your work of art (writing, drawing, music, etc) to have it copyrighted.  Under the new law, these will be called “orphans” (hence the name of the bill). Under the new law, anything that ISN’T registered with a company for copyright is considered and orphan and can be used by anyone (including businesses) and make a profit from it.  So you do a drawing, post it on DeviantArt, someone does a search, finds it’s not registered and can use it in an ad and they don’t owe you a cent, and you can’t do anything about it.  In fact, that person can register your art for copyright and then sue YOU if you use your own artwork.

Nice, huh?

Need more proof that this is a bad idea?  Here is an excerpt from the actual article by Mark Simon, on Animation World Magazine’s website.
“Photos on the internet could be orphaned. With tens of millions of photos shared online with services like Flickr, Shutterfly and Snapfish, there is a huge opportunity for unauthorized use of your photos… legally.

You could see photos you take of your family and kids, or of a family vacation, used in a magazine or newspaper without your permission or payment to you. You would have to pay to register your photos, all of them, in every new registry in order to protect them.Say the average person takes 300 photos per year (I take a lot more than that). If a registry only charges $5 per image, that is a whopping$1,500 to protect your photos that are protected automatically under the current laws. If there are three registries, protecting your images could cost an amazing $4,500. Not to mention the time it would take to register every photo you take. Plus, you will also have to place your copyright sign on every photo.

That’s not including all your art, sketches, paintings, 3D models, animations, etc. Do you really have all that extra time and money? Plus, even if you do register, the people stealing your work can still claim it was orphaned and, unless you fight them, they win. Even if you win, you may not make back your legal fees.

It gets even better. Anyone can submit images, including your images. They would then be excused from any liability for infringement(also known as THEFT) unless the legitimate rights owner (you) responds within a certain period of time to grant or deny permission to use your work.

That means you will also have to look through every image in every registry all the time to make sure someone is not stealing and registering your art. You could actually end up illegally using your own artwork if someone else registers it. DOES ANYONE SEE A PROBLEM WITH THIS?

Do you think the U.S. Copyright Office is here to protect you from this legislation? Think again.”

Wolfman Journals update

Episode three of the Wolfman Journals is underway, I’ve got a great idea of where the story is heading and I think I can get it finished and sent to the editor in a couple weeks so casting for that will begin soon. I want to cast all three episodes at the same time and get it all out of the way, maybe that will help get lines in faster, and not take as much time down the road.

I hope. We’ll see.

Be watching for the casting call, coming soon!

Iron Man 2 on Podcast page

I just posted Iron Man 2 to the podcast page, having mixed it over the past 2-3 days in a marathon mix session. The original post producer of the show, Dave Sobkowiak has been putting me off since he did the first episode (which was released last JUNE), and I finally had enough. If he can’t be bothered, I can move on. I have a new producer for the show, but I wanted to get at least one more episode out before the movie, and I had all the lines I needed to mix it, so I did.

Timmy Schmidt will be taking over with episode 3, so be watching for casting calls! In the meantime, head over to circus13.mypodcast.com to give a listen to Iron Man 2: Hulk Smash!

Human Target ep 1 is CAST!

Episode 1 of Human Target (including most of the lead roles) has been cast, finally!  With the post-producer, Timmy Schmidt, disappearing for awhile, I cast the roles.  So of course a couple days later, he contacts me, ready to go.  I told him what I had done, and he’s still on board, so this baby is going to ROLL!  I love this story, can’t wait to hear it.

The cast is as follows:

Bethany James - Gwendolyn Jensen-Woodard
Bodyguard - The Jester (me)
Bruno - Jules Ismail
Christopher Chance - David Ault
Emerald/Emma - Kim Gianopolous
Gang Leader - Eric Troup
Man - Eric Troup
Old Lady - Emilie Gillick
Reverend Earl James - Eric Troup

Congratulations to the cast.  Be looking for casting for the next episode soon, and ep 1 to be released in the coming months

Spider-man 4 & 6 auditions

So far, I have not received ONE audition for this.  Not one!  I’ve had 90 views on the VAA (which is riddled with anime-loving freaks who want anime or video game radio shows or parodies of same) and not one bite.  Not even a nibble.

I really hate the VAA.  There isn’t really one place to find a group of amateur voice actors large enough and willing enough to audition for smaller roles in an on-going production where the big roles (Spider-man, Kraven, Mary Jane and Vermin) are all already cast and have been for awhile.

Fuck ‘em.

Assault II script is completely finished!

That’s right, I just finished scripting the end of Assault II: Enmity and Armor part 3. It has been sent off to the editor for proofreading and consistency and once it passes muster….

THE FUN BEGINS!

I have already cast a lot of the roles.  So far I have one role open I think, in all three episodes.  That’s it.  Just one.  For a male character, brother to a female played by my wife Emilie.  He also has super powers, but none of them are brought out at ALL in this story, but his characterization is.  He’ll be a big part in Assault III, whenever I get around to writing it.  But for now, I’ll have to see who I like for the role of Tommy Warner, aka Gold.

But for me, the big part is over.  Writing it out.  It took a couple weeks and all told, the whole thing is about 70 pages.  Too short for a screenplay, but perfect for three short episodes of a radio play.  Now I just have to wait for lines to come in, record a few people, and mix it all together.  I’m thinking I should have all three done by the end of May.

Now I turn my attention elsewhere, to another original project and see where I can take it…

CASTING CALL for Spider-man: Kraven’s Last Hunt parts 4 & 6

CIRCUS-13 PRESENTS SPIDER-MAN in KRAVEN’S LAST HUNT parts 4 and 6, written by J. M. DeMatteis, adapted for radio by Timm Gillick in six parts.

Sergei Kravinov (aka Kraven the Hunter) has been a long-time foe of Spider-man, and eventually becomes obsessed with beating him. But not just beating him, completely overpowering him to prove that he is the better of the two. His plan is to get Spider-man out of the way and show that he can do better. A very dark tale of the web-slinger, it had a very unique style that I think adapts itself well to a moody, stylized radio play.

Recording and Contact information

-Record in 44100hz 16-bit Stereo MP3 or wav is fine.
-Save the lines as “charactername_yourname_linenumber.mp3″ (ex: Iron_Man_Jester_01.mp3)
-Please put multiple files in a ZIP or RAR file and label it as “yourname_SpiderMan_auds.zip”
-SOUND QUALITY IS A FACTOR! If you send me files with a lot of puffs and pops and background noise, you’ll get rejected out of hand. A low steady computer fan noise is fine, I can deal with that.
-And please don’t ask me about your audition. Don’t ask if there’s any way to change it, you should be sending in your best take on the character. If you want to do it multiple ways, feel free. I usually try to respond to you when you send in an audition, but if I haven’t after a couple days (not hours, days), then resend it, please.
-Send your auditions to jester@circus13productions.com.
-Deadline for these roles is APRIL 30, that gives you about one month to get them in.

Okay, all the roles are only a couple lines each, so I’ll take the best auditions and use them in the actual production. This means that your sound quality is a DEFINITE FACTOR. Since there are only a couple roles in episodes 4 and 6 (and none needed for 5), I’m combining the last two in one.

Assault II: Production notes

Parts 1 and 2 are scripted and most of the lines from the major characters are in, the two main holdouts are Diehard and Magic Man because they have to come over to record. I’ve got 5 of 11 scenes mixed of part 1 so far (can do the rest once I get those two recorded and cast one more role).

Part 2 I still have to record Emilie as Jake and the same other roles (Diehard and Magic Man) have to come over to record, but it’s shaping up nicely. Casting my buddy Shane Crandle as Baron Wolff turned out GREAT, he’s got such a nice rich voice. And with the additions of a super team called the Damage Ordinance Administration (D.O.A. for short), with Bill Hollweg as Onslaught, the wonderfully talented Laura Post as Fathom and Jerry Shipman (who is playing Big Daddy Fred in Truck) as Diehard, it’s shaping up to a big story!

I’ll be doing some small casting for each episode, but all at once (all the roles I need for all three episodes) to cut down on casting time, as well as mixing, getting all the lines ASAP. The main role to fill I think will be Tom Warner, Jake’s brother, and a super hero himself, known as Gold. With a couple surprises as well as a very special guest, Assault II: Enmity and Armor promises to raise the bar on Circus-13 original comic book radio plays!
