New scripter!

Circus-13 just picked up a new scripter and she’s already working on a new series (that she may develop completely herself).  Gwen Woodard-Johnson is adapting some original, public domain Conan stories by Robert E. Howard.  Look for Conan the barbarian to be hitting Circus-13 this summer!

Another series in production

To go along with the Pulp Westerns series, I have been checking out Munseys.com for other Pulp fiction books and the main one I found is mysteries.  There was a series by a man named Dan Marlowe (no relation to Phillip *grin*) about a bellhop/bouncer/private eye named Johnny Killain.  I found 5 of the 6 books in the public domain and decided it would make a decent series.

I copied the text into Final Draft (what I use for scripting, although I might start working with Celtx, which is free and has audio drama script template) and have been adapting it for radio.  I take out descriptions and put in sound effects as well as putting the dialogue into the script format, making it easier to find your lines for your part.

The text started out around 124 pages (I think), and as I work my way through it, I am on page 89 or so and the grand total has moved up to 178 pages as the format changes.  Once I get all the way through the entire script, I’ll find spots in the script to divide it up into 3-4 parts to make it a mini-series for Doorway to Death.   And then I got 4 more to do after that.  I didn’t think it would take so long, but I am enjoying it as it is giving me something creative to do.

My friend has another computer for me, a 2-year-old Compaq that I am going to beef up a bit and put Adobe Audition on it to make it my production computer.  And then maybe I can get X-men 3 finished.  I also hope to get another original story or two cranked out (working on Assault II, Wolfman Journals and my own Western for Pulp Westerns!.  Things ARE moving along, but at times it seems too slowly, but with honeymoon impending (we leave two weeks from today), class schedule being bad (and I’m falling behind on homework), as well as trying to find work and gigs for 3 Jack Voodoo…. Time sucks.

Stay tuned…

Jonah Hex update

I got an e-mail from Laura Frechette, post-producer for our Jonah Hex mini-series Shadows West today.  She has scene one mixed (music, sound effects and all) and was asking how well she did, seeing as how this is her first project.

She had some small pacing issues that needed to be resolved,  mostly I think it was  she put the vocal lines one after the other, rather than lining up the words for how they sound.

I am going to put it here for a little while (a week or so) and then the new file once she gets it done for a comparison.

With the exception of small timing issues on the lines, I think it’s GREAT!

But you be the judge.

New series from Circus-13

A little premature, but I’d like to keep some stuff like this rolling at least, to get it out there.

Waleed Ovase, our new producer for X-men (taking over with episode 4), is developing a new series for Circus-13. He’s adapting The Desperado by Clifton Adams for radio. Never heard of it? Not surprising, it’s a public domain pulp western novel. Once he’s finished with that one, he’s moving on to the sequel entitled Noose for the Desperado. And what is all this for, you may ask?

It’s for our new series, currently in development, entitled Westerns! Once we have those two Clifton Adams stories finished, we might move on to some original Western stories (I’ve got one I need to finish called Freedom, Kansas) or maybe some more public domain pulp Westerns. Man, I love those things.

I am working on an original theme song for Westerns! as I type this (well, in between typing this actually), having never composed music for a radio production before, it should be fun.

If anyone has any original western stories they’d like to submit for possible play in Circus-13’s new series, contact myself or Waleed.

Recording and Contact information –

-Record in 44100hz 16-bit Stereo MP3 or wav is fine.
-Save the lines as “charactername_yourname_linenumber.mp3″ (ex: JonahHex_Jester_01.mp3)
-Please put multiple files in a ZIP or RAR file and label it as “yourname_JonahHex_auds.zip”
-Send your auditions to frechette@circus13productions.com
-SOUND QUALITY IS A FACTOR! If you send me files with a lot of puffs and pops and background noise, you’ll get rejected out of hand. A low steady computer fan noise is fine, I can deal with that.
-And please don’t ask me about your audition. Don’t ask if there’s any way to change it, you should be sending in your best take on the character. If you want to do it multiple ways, feel free. I usually try to respond to you when you send in an audition, but if I haven’t after a couple days (not hours, days), then resend it, please.

Here are the roles in no particular order. WARNING! This is more of a PG/PG-13/R type radio play! There IS some cussing from most of the characters. If this offends you, DON’T AUDITION!

FEMALES: (only 2, I know, but it’s a Western)
Name: LIBBY ANN

Audition line 02: Here, Hex. Take. Hold him.

MALES:
Name: LIBBY’S HUSBAND
Age: mid-30’s to mid-40’s
Bio: henpecked husband to the mean-spirited Libby Ann. Doesn’t say much, he isn’t even given a name in the story, just “Libby’s Husband.” He’s kinda scared all the time.
Audition line 01: Scares YOU? You ought to LIVE with her!
Audition line 02: (stage whisper) Won’t be the first pair. (pause, aloud) I said, “Let’s get that BEAR!”

Age: late teens to early 20’s
Bio: one of the not-so-bright young rousties at the show. He’s “volunteered” to chase after Jonah and Spotted Balls.
Audition line 01: I can’t think of any… I’m not good at jokes…
Audition line 02: Good. I don’t like it. (pause) Does YOUR head hurt, Tom? (pause) When you THINK?

Name: ROUSTY 1, 2, 3
Age: any
Bio: the not-so-bright Rousties at the show. They each have one line, then a group line altogether (listed under the next heading), so read for all of them. And Rousty 1 has a second line in part 3.
Audition line 01: Where you goin’ with the camp poke? (line 2) Smells more like SHIT to me!
Audition line 02: That bear TOO?
Audition line 03: You can’t do that, Spotted Hand!

Name: ROUSTIES
Age: any
Bio: If you read for the Rousty parts, you HAVE to read this line as well.
Audition line 01: (scared) NO SIR!
Audition line 02: (laugh out loud as if you just saw something amusing)

Casting Call for Human Target

The Human Target!CIRCUS-13 PRESENTS THE HUMAN TARGET, written by Peter Milligan, adapted for radio by Timm Gillick. Everyone’s favorite bodyguard who impersonates the victim to draw out the assassin in brand new adventures!

Recording and Contact information –

-Record in 44100hz 16-bit Stereo MP3 or wav is fine.
-Save the lines as “charactername_yourname_linenumber.mp3″ (ex: Chance_Jester_01.mp3)
-Please put multiple files in a ZIP or RAR file and label it as “yourname_Target_auds.zip”
-Send your auditions to TimmyKSound@circus13productions.com

NOTE: Anyone who auditions for ANY role, please also read for the Congregation (under Male/Female) as I need a LOT of voices for this part. Thank you.

FEMALES: (only 3, I know, but there is one I need a LOT of both sexes to read and a couple more coming next time round, too)
Name: BETHANY JAMES
Age: mid 30’s to early 40’s
Bio: wife to the Rev. Earl James, a strong willed black woman, very composed, almost regal
Audition line 01: That they really did introduce crack into our neighborhood, deliberately to destroy us, and not just to fund whatever war they were fighting?
Audition line 02: And what about YOU, Reverend Earl James? Aren’t you quaking just a little?

Name: EMERALD/EMMA (female lead)
Age: late 20’s through mid 30’s
Bio: female assassin by night, homemaker by day (but that comes later). Very tough, thorough, needs to prove herself to the men in the business. Sultry, super-spy/Bond-girl type.
Audition line 01: Who am I? (beat) I am a reputation. I am a grainy photograph of a man with dark bulletholes instead of eyes.

Name: OLD LADY
Age: mid 60’s up
Bio: a member of the congregation in Rev. James’ church. Fed up at the gang-bangers coming in to ruin “her”services. Only has the one line, so I’ll take the best one.

MALES:
Name: CHRISTOPHER CHANCE (title character)
Age: mid 30’s to mid-40’s
Bio: Chris Chance is an actor of a different sort, he takes over people’s lives that are in danger. He BECOMES the victim in an attempt to draw out the assassin. Very cool, very calm, very competent. TO WHOMEVER GETS THIS ROLE: You will only be doing the role of Chance. Any people he is impersonating will be played by the actor in that role. For example, The actor playing Rev. James will be portraying the reverend even when it’s Chance impersonating him.
Audition line 01: Once, people called me THE HUMAN TARGET — it seemed appropriate at the time. It probably lacks the right degree of irony for today.
Audition line 02: Quiet! I’ll deal with you later. You came to me a few months ago, wanted me to do a job. I turned you down.

Name: BODYGUARD
Age: early to late 20’s
Bio: bodyguard to the gang banger leader, young black kid. only has these four lines, so I will use the best ones.
Audition line 01: Enough of this pussy-eatin’ shit! The only message worth lis’nin’ to sounds like this…
Audition line 02: You missed, Reverend!
Audition line 03: Shee–
Audition line 04: (dying) –it!

Name: BRUNO
Age: late 30’s to mid 50’s
Bio: owner/master chef of a fine restaurant and Christopher Chance’s confidant. He is the go-between to get Chance his assignments. If you need the Human Target, you contact Bruno. Kind of fussy (like C3-PO) with a slight European accent.
Audition line 01: For eight months running, Chris, she books a table for two. Then sits and eats alone. Then LEAVES alone.
Audition line 02: A la carte.

Name: DEAD MAN 1
Age: any
Bio: victim of Emerald in the first scene, she shoots him in the belly and he’s dying. Only has the one line, so will use the best.
Audition line 01: My god! My god!

Name: GANG LEADER
Age: late teens to early 20’s
Bio: Head gang banger that’s trying to take over Rev. Earl James’ church, young black male. Only has the four lines, so will use the best one.
Audition line 01: (shouting over gunfire) Mutha-fuck! What happened to TURN THE OTHER CHEEK ‘n shit?! HOLD UP!
Audition line 02: A-ight — you best come with your hands empty, nigga, or we start icing these nice fine people here!
Audition line 03: Ay-yo! What’s it gonna be, preacher?
Audition line 04: Damn fuckin’ right we got your ass.

Name: GANG BANGER 1 & 2
Age: late teens to early 20’s

Name: REVEREND EARL JAMES
Age: late 30’s through late 40’s
Bio: Dignified black preacher in south central L.A. Been fighting the gangs trying to take over his church. Almost like an up-and-coming Martin Luther King, Jr. Strong, strong willed, diginified.
Audition line 01: (preaching) And then felt yourself baptized by the flowing waters of their GRATITUDE. You have taken them to the very edge of the wilderness, and now delivered them unto the good land of faith, hope and glory!
Audition line 02: If a little truth gets TWISTED in order to tell a BIGGER TRUTH, so be it. (beat) Hmmm. Bethany. You smell as good as ever. You’re my earthly strength and consolation.

MALE/FEMALE:
Name: CONGREGATION
Age: any and all
Bio: this is the church congregation of a “black” church, there is only the one line, but there are a lot of voices involved. In subsequent episodes, there are other parts needed for the whole congregation to be saying things in unison (like “Amen!”), but I will put those in the casting calls for the specific episodes. I need each sentence done a couple times a couple different ways, as if the whole congregation were saying these things at various times.
Audition line 01: HALLELUJAH! Into our lives sweet Jesus! Amen!

Remember to send your lines to TimmyKSound@circus13productions.com.
